Erica Bailey is a student of civil engineering at California State University, Northridge. She is fascinated with structure—that is, bridges and buildings. When she travels, which she loves to do, she is more likely to take pictures of the buildings than the people who work or live in them.
A question very often asked of Erica is, “Where is your accent from?” The listeners probably hear in her speech, English words drenched in a Spanish accent sprinkled with inflections from the islands. Erica is a Black Latina woman born in Venezuela. Her mother is from Trinidad and Tobago and her father is from Guyana. She currently has citizenship both in Venezuela and the United States.
Erica finds challenges in being a woman in a male-dominated profession and required to communicate in English while thinking in Spanish. She overcomes those challenges by feeling with her heart, believing in the possibilities, and taking breaks to enjoy the things she loves—cooking, architecture, and nature.
We had an intimate conversation with Erica as she courageously shared with us the challenges of being a woman of color as a civil engineering student in the U.S. Erica has already earned this degree while in Venezuela and is now managing to earn her degree for the second time in her second language! Attendees were left inspired and determined to never give up as well as intrigued by learning Venezuelan customs.
